Greggs to Open First Overseas Branch in Tenerife Airport
Greggs Opens First Overseas Branch in Tenerife

Greggs, the beloved British bakery chain founded in Newcastle in 1939, is preparing to open its first overseas branch in Tenerife. The new outlet, located at Tenerife South Airport, aims to offer British tourists 'a slice of home' while also catering to local tastes with items such as Spanish Omelette Rolls and freshly squeezed orange juice.

Expanding Beyond UK Borders

With over 2,500 locations across the United Kingdom, Greggs has long been a staple of British high streets. Now, the company is taking a significant step by venturing abroad for the first time. The branch at Tenerife South Airport will feature seating for up to 92 customers, providing a comfortable space for travellers to enjoy their favourite baked goods before or after their flights.

Greggs described the airport as 'the ideal location to test spreading our wings in an overseas setting.' This move follows the success of Wetherspoons, which opened its first continental European pub at Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport last December.

Targeting British Holidaymakers

Tenerife South Airport sees approximately 13 million passengers annually, with nearly half travelling to and from the UK. Greggs' outlet will target these tourists with its best-known offerings, including sausage rolls and doughnuts, alongside local adaptations. The bakery chain believes its affordable range will prove just as popular in Spain as it is in Britain.

Greggs chief executive Roisin Currie expressed excitement about bringing 'a slice of home' to the Canary Islands, noting that the airport's high volume of British and international visitors made it the perfect trial location. The branch is situated in the departures area, intended to give travellers a final taste of home before their return journey.

Partnership with Lagardère Travel Retail

The new branch is opening in partnership with Lagardère Travel Retail, which operates over 5,000 stores worldwide. Javier Cagigal, chief executive of Lagardère Travel Retail, said the company is pleased to bring such a well-loved British brand to Tenerife, providing passengers with a familiar and comforting option before their journey home.

Greggs' expansion into Tenerife marks a milestone for the brand, which has become synonymous with affordable, on-the-go food in the UK. The company hopes that this overseas test will pave the way for future international growth.
