King Charles and Queen Camilla are set to attend the Betfred Derby at Epsom Downs on Saturday, marking their first appearance at the prestigious race as monarchs. The royal couple will continue a long-standing tradition of royal attendance at the event, which has been synonymous with the meeting for generations.
Royal Tradition at the Derby
The Derby was the only Classic that the King's late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, never won as an owner. She came closest during her Coronation year in 1953 when her horse Aureole finished second to Pinza. Throughout her lengthy reign, she was a devoted racegoer at the Derby, missing the fixture only twice. This tradition has been upheld by King Charles and Queen Camilla, who previously attended Oaks day in 2024 to present the Coronation Cup. They will now make the journey to the celebrated Surrey Downs for the most prestigious day of racing.
Epsom General Manager's Excitement
Epsom's general manager, Jim Allen, expressed his delight at the royal visit: "We are honoured and thrilled that the King and Queen will be joining us at Epsom Downs on Derby day. Their Majesties show great enthusiasm, interest, and support for horseracing in the UK. Patrons of the Jockey Club
Both the King and Queen serve as patrons of the Jockey Club, which owns and operates Epsom Downs Racecourse. Their attendance comes just over a week before Royal Ascot commences, where the iconic purple, gold, and red silks will have numerous opportunities to build on Desert Hero's triumph at the meeting in 2023.
