One of Germany's most celebrated inner-city surf spots has officially reopened on a canal in Munich, just in time for the summer season. Mayor Dominic Krause announced on 8 May that surfing can resume on the Eisbach wave following the natural formation of a stable, surfable wave. The wave had mysteriously vanished in October 2024 after the city's annual drainage for river maintenance.
History and Revival
The Eisbach wave, located on Prinzregentenstrasse avenue at the southern edge of the English Garden, was first surfed in the 1970s. It was originally formed by a combination of natural river movements and submerged concrete blocks, later modified by water sport enthusiasts. After its disappearance, surfers installed a beam to recreate the wave, but authorities controversially removed it in December.
Mayor Krause expressed his delight at the wave's return, stating, "Surfing on the Eisbach is part of the Munich way of life; the Eisbach wave is a landmark of the city. I'm delighted that surfing on the Eisbach is finally possible again. It was my goal from the very beginning to open the wave as soon as possible. Now nature has cooperated, and the wave is back."
New Safety Regulations
In response to a tragic incident in 2025, where a surfer died after her board became trapped underwater and she could not free herself from her leash, new safety rules have been implemented. All surfers must now use a self-releasing leash, and surfing is banned after 10pm. Swimming remains prohibited at the wave, which is considered suitable only for experienced surfers.
According to Munich's city portal, "Surfing the Eisbach wave is challenging and involves risks. Therefore, clear rules and safety regulations are in place to protect surfers and visitors. Surfing is only possible in compliance with these current regulations."
A Landlocked Surfing Destination
Munich is entirely landlocked, with its nearest ocean coastline hundreds of miles away in Italy. Despite this, the Eisbach wave has become a world-famous surfing destination, drawing enthusiasts from across the globe. The wave's unique urban setting and challenging conditions make it a must-visit for experienced surfers.
