When planning an Italian holiday, my brother and I sought a destination off the beaten path. Having previously enjoyed the tranquil coastal village of Moneglia in Genoa and the cultural riches of Tuscan cities like Florence and Siena, we settled on Naples in southern Italy. Known for its legendary pizza, vibrant nightlife, and lively cobbled streets, it promised a unique adventure.
Widespread Warnings and Online Fears
However, as soon as we mentioned our plans, we were met with a chorus of concern. Friends and acquaintances branded Naples as "dodgy", "dangerous", and "scary". Curious, I turned to social media, where countless TikTok clips echoed these sentiments, with some users claiming it gave "kidnapping vibes" or labeling it "the most dangerous city in the world". This unnerved me, but it also served as a stark reminder not to trust everything encountered online.
Arrival and First Impressions
Our journey from the airport to our lodgings in the Quartieri Spagnoli, or Spanish Quarter, was initially nerve-wracking. Naples presented a stark contrast to other Italian cities I had visited, with its potholed roads and graffiti-covered walls giving an undeniably dilapidated appearance. Yet, there was an immediate, endearing charm to it.
Due to a delayed flight, we arrived around 1am. To our surprise, our Airbnb host personally drove to the airport to collect us, ensuring we could settle in despite the late hour. This act of generosity offered our first glimpse into the wonderful spirit of Neapolitan people.

On our first day, we ventured into the Quartieri Spagnoli, a labyrinthine network of cobbled lanes adorned with bunting, markets, and shop fronts. The area was alive with energy, with images of Diego Maradona—a former Napoli player revered almost as a saint—covering walls and hanging above streets. The atmosphere was tangible and intoxicating.
Simply wandering through the city proved exhilarating. Mopeds zipped past on narrow streets, and the bustling crowds created a sense of constant motion. We decided to climb to Castel Sant'Elmo, a medieval fortress perched atop the city. The steep walk past beautiful villas and pastel-colored apartments was challenging in the spring heat, but the panoramic views from the summit were breathtaking, overlooking the Bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius.
Proximity to Ancient History
Naples' location also allows easy access to the ancient ruins of Pompeii, a site I had longed to visit since childhood. A mere half-hour train ride brought us to this remarkably preserved archaeological settlement, lost to the catastrophic eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D. We opted for audio guides to explore at our own pace, with a site guide marking key spots on our maps, as Pompeii is too vast to cover fully in one day. Strolling through the ruins, we absorbed the stories of its former inhabitants.
Evening Delights and Culinary Excellence
After a day of exploration, we returned to Naples for an evening of relaxation. The city after dark is simply unmatched. We started with Aperol Spritz at one of the many bars, soaking up the lively atmosphere, before indulging in Neapolitan pizza—widely regarded as the finest in the world. The combination of vibrant nightlife and culinary excellence was unforgettable.
A City Bursting with Energy
We spent three days in Naples and relished every moment. Yes, it is hectic, and crossing the road requires nerve and a disregard for personal safety, but the city hums with life. The views are breathtaking, the locals are brilliant, and the energy is palpable. My firsthand experience proved that you shouldn't believe everything you read online.
