Philadelphia International Airport has officially set a new Guinness World Record for the "Longest Line of Cheesesteaks," creating a remarkable 1,200-foot stretch of the city's iconic sandwich across its B/C connectors. This meaty milestone was achieved on Tuesday with the enthusiastic participation of over 100 employees and volunteers, who worked tirelessly to assemble the impressive display.
A Monumental Culinary Effort
The record-breaking endeavor required an astonishing 990 pounds of Philly's Best Steak and 225 pounds of cheese sauce, all meticulously placed on foot-long rolls. According to reports from the Philadelphia Inquirer, the entire assembly process took approximately one hour to complete, showcasing both efficiency and community spirit.
Local Restaurants Rally Behind the Cause
Several renowned Philadelphia cheesesteak establishments joined forces to make this achievement possible. Participating restaurants included Chickie's & Pete's, Geno's Steaks, Jim's South St Famous Cheesesteaks, Passyunk Steaks, and Tony Luke's, all rolling out their expertise to help secure the record.
Guinness World Record official Michael Empric was on hand to authenticate the event, confirming that every roll was properly touching to meet the strict qualification standards. "What I love about this is that it's so specific to the Philadelphia community," Empric remarked. "To do this in the airport and to donate so many of the cheesesteaks to TSA is really incredible. It's such a community spirit sort of thing."
Airport as Philadelphia's Culinary Gateway
Dana Krawchuk, the PHL marketing and guest experience manager, emphasized the airport's unique position in Philadelphia's food landscape. "The airport is really the entry point for everybody coming into the city," Krawchuk explained. "So we wanted to really start off really big." She noted that Philadelphia International Airport boasts more restaurants serving cheesesteaks in a single location than anywhere else in the city, making it the perfect venue for such an ambitious culinary achievement.
Feeding Those Who Serve Without Pay
Following the official recognition of the record, the cheesesteaks were distributed to airport staff, including Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officials. This donation held particular significance as many TSA agents have gone weeks without paychecks due to the ongoing partial Department of Homeland Security shutdown that began last month.
Pete Ciarrocchio, CEO of Chickie's and Pete's, expressed his pride in both the record and the charitable aspect of the event. "Breaking the world record is always awesome," Ciarrocchio stated. "But one of my favorite things today was feeding the TSA with the cheesesteaks because this city is the City of Brotherly Love and these people are working without pay. Without them, nobody can be in this airport."
The event successfully blended Philadelphia's culinary heritage with community support, creating a memorable moment that celebrated both local tradition and practical assistance for federal workers affected by the government shutdown. The 1,200-foot cheesesteak line now stands as a testament to Philadelphia's enduring spirit and its famous sandwich's place in both local culture and world record history.
