Race Across the World Couple Condemn Airport Lounge as 'Worst Ever' Experience

Stephen and Viv Redding, a couple from Uppingham in Rutland who gained fame on the BBC's Race Across the World, have publicly criticised what they describe as a "shocking" airport lounge, labelling it the most disappointing travel encounter of their lives. Despite having journeyed to approximately 60 countries, their recent visit to an Avianca lounge left them stunned and dissatisfied.

The Costly Lounge Access That Fell Short

The couple, aged 64 and 68 respectively, were returning to London Heathrow after an extensive six-week tour across South America. While awaiting their flight to Bogotá, they decided to pay nearly £50 for access to what they anticipated would be a comfortable business class lounge at San Jose airport. This decision followed initial confusion over their ticket eligibility for complimentary lounge entry.

"We bought business class tickets because it was a long-haul flight, allowing us flat beds for rest," Stephen explained. "We believed lounge access was included, but were informed our tickets did not qualify. With over two hours to spare, we opted to pay for the upgrade ourselves."

Disappointing Amenities and Subpar Food

Upon entering the lounge, the experienced travellers were immediately taken aback by the substandard conditions. Stephen recounted the culinary letdown, stating, "There was only one meal option available: a tasteless and watery spaghetti bolognese. The pasta was cold, the sauce unappetising, and a side bread offering was dried out and flavourless."

Beyond the food, the couple highlighted additional shortcomings:

  • Drinks were limited to one glass of wine per person, provided via tokens.
  • Seating was uncomfortable and tables appeared shabby.
  • The overall ambiance failed to meet the standards of other global airport lounges they have frequented.

"We've visited up to a dozen lounges worldwide since our Race Across the World appearance two years ago, and this is unequivocally the worst we've ever encountered," Stephen emphasised.

Frustration Over Complaint Handling

The Reddings raised their concerns with lounge staff at the time but felt their feedback was met with indifference. After returning home, they contacted Avianca directly to request a refund, citing the poor lounge quality. However, their complaint was formally rejected.

"We asked for our money back due to the inadequate lounge experience, but Avianca refused, essentially stating that's just how it is," Stephen noted. He did clarify that their actual flight with Avianca was "absolutely spot on" with no complaints, but the lounge disappointment marred their journey's end.

"After six weeks of touring northern South America, we were exhausted and simply sought a comfortable space to relax before our flight. This lounge did not fulfil our needs in any meaningful way," he concluded, underscoring the gap between expectation and reality in premium travel services.
