Two retired RAF Sea King helicopters have been transformed into stunning glamping pods, offering a unique overnight experience at £130 per night, and they are already fully booked. The yellow aircraft, once used for life-saving search and rescue missions across the UK, have found a permanent home at North Yorkshire Water Park, located at Wykeham Lakes near Scarborough.
A New Lease of Life
The helicopters, designated ZE369 and XZ589, have been stripped of their specialist interiors and refitted with modern amenities. Inside, guests will find a double bed, bunk beds, and a compact kitchen equipped with a microwave, toaster, kettle, and fridge. Some cockpit elements, including controls and switches, have been preserved, adding to the authentic aviation atmosphere. The sliding door serves as the main entrance, opening onto a gravel landing pad with a picnic bench.
These conversions add to a small number of Sea Kings that have been repurposed as livable accommodation in Britain. The water park describes the pods as offering a "unique and memorable" stay, suitable for couples and families alike.
Preserving History
James Whitehead, operations manager at North Yorkshire Water Park, expressed excitement about the new addition: "We are incredibly excited to welcome the new Sea King helicopter glamping pods to our stay on-site offering. Both helicopters have an extraordinary history, having spent decades carrying out life-saving search and rescue missions across the UK. It was important to us that the original character and charm is preserved as much as possible while making them a cosy place to relax after a day of fun."
The pods became available for booking from Friday, May 1, and the first four weeks are already fully booked via Airbnb. Prices start at £130 per night.
