Budget hotel chain Travelodge has implemented a significant revision to its pet accommodation policy, just ahead of the bustling May half-term and summer travel period. The company, which operates over 600 hotels across the United Kingdom, has confirmed an adjustment in the flat fee charged to guests bringing their domesticated animals.
Revised Pricing Structure for Pet Owners
Previously, Travelodge permitted up to two pets, such as cats or dogs, in each room across its standard and SuperRooms categories for a fixed charge of £20 per animal per entire stay. This fee was designed to accommodate the additional deep cleaning required after pets vacated the premises. However, the chain has now elevated this charge to £25 per pet per stay, marking a £5 increase that will impact travellers seeking animal-friendly lodging options.
Official Statement from Travelodge
A spokesperson for Travelodge elaborated on the rationale behind this change, stating, "We are proud to be the only UK budget hotel chain to welcome pets at every one of our 600+ hotels, 365 days a year." The representative further explained, "Having held our pet supplement at the same price for over a decade, we have introduced a £5 increase across the majority of our hotels to reflect rising operational costs and ensure we can continue to offer a great quality stay for guests travelling with their animals."
The spokesperson emphasised that the flat fee covers the entire duration of a pet's visit, contrasting with alternative hotel policies that might impose nightly charges. "Unlike many other hotels, our flat fee of £25 per pet covers the entire duration of a pet’s stay, ensuring Travelodge remains a highly competitive and value-for-money option for pet owners," they added. Customers will encounter the updated pricing when making pet bookings through the Travelodge website.
Booking Procedures and Pet Restrictions
Guests intending to travel with their pets can include them as an extra during the payment stage of the online reservation process. While animals are permitted to reside in the guest rooms, they are typically excluded from bar and restaurant areas within the hotels. Notably, assistance dogs receive an exemption from any fees and are welcomed at all Travelodge locations free of charge.
Broader Context of Pet Travel Trends
This policy shift occurs amidst a vibrant discourse concerning pets in public spaces and travel environments. Recently, a prominent European airline unveiled intentions to allow dogs in the cabin, enabling owners to purchase seats for their canine companions instead of confining them to cargo holds. A survey indicated that 95% of respondents supported the notion of dogs accompanying their owners in aircraft cabins.
Furthermore, research involving over 2,000 pet owners revealed that approximately 60% of dog owners select holiday destinations based on their pet's preferences. Top UK locations for dog-friendly travel include Devon and Cornwall, with 78% of owners prioritising proximity to suitable walking areas. Additionally, 30% of pet owners stated they would avoid revisiting a staycation spot if it failed to meet their animal's needs, while around one-third plan their journeys around pet-friendly rest stops.
The updated fee structure aims to balance operational expenses with the growing demand for pet-inclusive travel, as Brits increasingly incorporate their furry friends into holiday plans.
