A couple's meticulously planned dream holiday to the Philippines has descended into a medical nightmare following a devastating scooter crash that left them hospitalised with life-threatening injuries. Daniel Guz, 49, and his partner Julia Sek, 45, from St Ives in Cambridgeshire, embarked on what was intended to be a celebratory two-week adventure across the archipelago, serving as an early birthday present for Daniel's upcoming 50th in April.
Dream Holiday Shattered in Mere Moments
Their idyllic plans were catastrophically derailed just two days after their arrival on March 5. While exploring the picturesque town of El Nido on Palawan Island via scooter, their vehicle encountered a treacherous slippery patch on the road, possibly sand or oil, causing them to lose control. The bike skidded violently for over fifty metres, careening off the road and sending the couple tumbling across rough terrain of grass, rocks, and stones before coming to a precarious halt between electricity posts, narrowly avoiding a direct collision.
Severe Injuries and a Harrowing Medical Odyssey
The accident inflicted grave injuries on both individuals. Daniel, a lorry driver, suffered a ruptured spleen alongside a broken leg and hip. Julia, who works as a printer, sustained fractures to both of her arms, with additional damage to her hands, face, and teeth. Initially, only one ambulance was available in the village, forcing emergency services to transport Julia first and then return for Daniel.
Their medical journey was fraught with challenges. After being taken to a local hospital, it quickly became apparent that their conditions were too severe for the facility's capabilities. They endured multiple transfers throughout the day, culminating in an agonising overnight ambulance journey of approximately 400 miles on secondary roads to reach a more equipped hospital. The following morning, they were transferred once more to St Luke's Medical Center in Manila, which is supported by their health insurance provider.
Extensive Surgical Interventions and Uncertain Recovery
Comprehensive scans at St Luke's revealed the full extent of their trauma. Daniel required two separate surgeries: one to remove his ruptured spleen and another to repair the fractures in his leg and hip. Julia underwent surgery on both arms, necessitating the insertion of metal implants to stabilise the bones. Both remain hospitalised, undergoing various procedures with no clear timeline for when they can return to the United Kingdom.
Despite the ordeal, Daniel maintains a resilient outlook. He reflected, "We had two days of fantastic holiday and we've been in hospital ever since. But the good thing is, we didn't die, and we are together. We got a second chance." To pass the time during their recovery, his daughter has sent movies for them to watch in hospital.
Financial and Logistical Challenges Ahead
While their current hospital treatments are covered by insurance, the couple anticipates significant additional costs upon their return to the UK. These include private physiotherapy and potential further medical treatments. A GoFundMe fundraiser has been initiated by their friend Monika to assist with these impending expenses and support their rehabilitation.
Daniel, who is himself an avid fundraiser for humanitarian causes in the UK, expressed concern about their future, stating, "We don't know when we'll be able to return to work, and we'll probably need extra physiotherapy." The couple is also in contact with the Polish Ambassador to facilitate their eventual repatriation to the UK.
Their planned itinerary, which included exploring El Nido's renowned lagoons and cliffs before venturing to other Philippine destinations, has been irrevocably replaced by a protracted and painful recovery process, highlighting the unforeseen dangers that can accompany international travel.
