Travel enthusiasts have been left astonished after discovering a village in the UK that looks like it belongs in the Mediterranean. Portmeirion, located in Gwynedd, North Wales, is a historic holiday resort designed by architect Clough Williams-Ellis in the 1920s. The village took nearly 50 years to build and features colorful buildings, secret gardens, sandy beaches, and even a giant chessboard.
A Touch of Italy in Wales
In a viral TikTok video, travel creators Caz and Gaz shared their visit to Portmeirion, describing it as a "dreamy village" that feels like walking through a storybook. "Would you believe me if I told you this isn't an Italian village, but it's actually somewhere in the UK?" Caz said. The architect aimed to bring a touch of the Mediterranean to Britain while demonstrating how development could enhance natural beauty without causing harm.
Visitor Reactions
Many viewers were amazed that such a place exists in the UK. One commented, "We've been there last year. The beach is amazing, but Portmeirion was so busy. Loved it though." Another shared, "My parents came here to celebrate after getting married. The wedding photos are gorgeous." However, one less impressed viewer wrote, "No thanks, I'll go to Italy instead and see the real thing... for less probably."
Dining and Entry
Visitors can enjoy a two- or three-course Sunday dinner at the village, which grants free entry. Caz noted that their three-course meal did not disappoint. The village is also known as the filming location for the 1960s TV series The Prisoner.
Portmeirion remains a popular staycation destination, offering a unique escape that rivals Mediterranean getaways without the cost and stress of international travel.
