In an era dominated by social media and fleeting selfies, the Swedish city of Uppsala is championing a return to the intellectual roots of travel. Destination Uppsala has launched a pioneering initiative called 'IQ tourism', designed to attract curious travellers seeking depth and meaning over superficial photo opportunities.

Reigniting Intellectual Travel

Helena Bovin, head of marketing at Destination Uppsala, describes IQ tourism as a movement. 'Travel is increasingly centred on meaning, context, and new facets rather than simply experiences to check off a list,' she explains. 'Uppsala has all the prerequisites to be a destination for this type of traveller.'

Bovin emphasises that the campaign aims to make curiosity the primary reason for visiting. 'With IQ tourism, we're highlighting experiences and phenomena with content, perspective, and depth. It's a shift from consuming a destination to allowing it to help you discover, reflect, and develop.'

Uppsala's Rich Academic Heritage

Home to one of Europe's oldest universities, founded in 1477, Uppsala has been a hub for ideas, knowledge, and innovative thinking for centuries. IQ tourism gathers over 60 experiences from across the city, blending groundbreaking research, history, contemporary innovations, culture, food, and handicrafts. The programme offers a diverse range of activities that encourage intellectual engagement. Visitors can use code words to unlock book tips at independent bookstores, explore historical events that may never have happened but left a cultural mark, or create personalised perfumes where each component tells a story.

Other highlights include discovering miniature worlds hidden in plain sight throughout the city and participating in conversations at specialist coffee roasteries where dialogue is as important as the brew. A particularly innovative feature is a red tower viewer that will be placed in various locations, directing attention not to popular photo spots but to overlooked details, phenomena, and narratives.

Cultural and Scientific Attractions

Key sites under the IQ tourism umbrella include Gustavianum, Uppsala University's oldest preserved building. This museum houses thousands of years of history, from mummies and Viking helmets to art, ancient coins, and Celsius's original thermometer. Its permanent exhibitions showcase highlights from university collections amassed since the institution's founding.

Another standout is the Cube of Art, a gigantic black cube with a seven-meter ceiling height. Its walls and floor are illuminated with interactive lasers, creating a dynamic, ever-changing art experience. The cube also functions as an escape room, appealing to those seeking mental challenges.

For history enthusiasts, Gamla Uppsala offers an immersive introduction to Viking culture at one of Sweden's most significant historic sites. These experiences collectively emphasise science and culture-led travel, providing a meaningful alternative to the prevailing selfie culture.
