Virgin Voyages Adjusts Maiden Alaska Cruise Route Following Hazardous Landslide
Virgin Voyages has implemented significant changes to its inaugural Alaska cruise itinerary after a dangerous landslide rendered parts of the original route unsafe. The cruise line's Brilliant Lady ship will embark from Seattle, Washington, next month for its first-ever Alaska season, but passengers will experience an altered course through the region's stunning landscapes.
Safety Concerns Prompt Itinerary Revision
The modification comes in response to ongoing landslide risks in Tracy Arm Fjord, where a substantial landslide occurred in August 2025 above the South Sawyer Glacier base. This geological event caused a tsunami when collapsing material plunged into the waters below. Although no injuries or fatalities were reported from the incident, the United States Geological Survey has warned that the area will remain hazardous for years to come.
"Steep, mountainous landslide areas are inherently unstable and will continue to change for years following an initial landslide," the USGS stated on its official website. "Continued rockfall and smaller-scale landslide events from the exposed landslide scar are expected and could impact the water, potentially causing future local tsunami."
New Destination: Endicott Arm Fjord and Dawes Glacier
Instead of visiting Tracy Arm Fjord as originally planned, the Brilliant Lady will now navigate through Endicott Arm Fjord and showcase the magnificent Dawes Glacier. Virgin Voyages communicated this change to customers through its network of travel agent partners, known as First Mates, who relayed the information to passengers booked on the upcoming voyages.
One Virgin Voyages customer shared the notification on social media last week, revealing that the substitution was made "due to ongoing landslide risk in the area." The message from First Mates assured travelers that "the length, ship, and overall experience remain unchanged, and we look forward to delivering an incredible time in Alaska."
Enhanced Experience with New Excursion
Virgin Voyages has announced that passengers will benefit from an exclusive new shore excursion in Endicott Arm that can be booked once onboard the Brilliant Lady. The cruise line describes Endicott Arm as winding "through sheer granite cliffs and drifting ice, leading to the towering Dawes Glacier," promising equally spectacular views of Alaska's natural wonders.
The revised itinerary maintains the ship's scheduled departure from Seattle on May 21, with planned stops in Alaskan ports including Ketchikan and Sitka before cruising through the newly designated fjord and glacier. Following the Alaskan portion of the journey, the Brilliant Lady will travel to Canada for a stop in Prince Rupert, British Columbia, before returning to its Seattle homeport.
Inaugural Season Proceeds with Adjusted Plans
Despite the itinerary modification, Virgin Voyages remains committed to launching its first Alaska season successfully. The Brilliant Lady represents the cruise line's expansion into Alaskan waters, joining its fleet of adult-focused cruise ships. The company has emphasized that the core experience of exploring Alaska's breathtaking wilderness remains intact, with only the specific routing adjusted for passenger safety.
The Independent has contacted Virgin Voyages for additional comment regarding the itinerary changes and the company's ongoing assessment of Alaskan sailing conditions. This development follows recent legislative action in Florida, where a bill blocking a proposed cruise terminal was passed, though that decision appears unrelated to the Alaskan itinerary adjustments.
