Ed Chapman, who documents his travels on his popular YouTube channel, visited Riga, the capital of Latvia, after it was highlighted as one of the continent's cheapest cities in a recent survey by Post Office Travel.
Affordable Flights and a Striking Comparison
Chapman's primary motivation for the trip was to conduct a direct comparison between Riga and Oslo, Norway, which is widely regarded as one of Europe's most expensive urban centres. According to flight search engine Skyscanner, travellers can secure return flights to Riga from Leeds Bradford Airport for as little as £28, making it an incredibly accessible destination for budget-conscious tourists from the United Kingdom.

The most eye-opening revelation from Chapman's adventure was the vast difference in hotel pricing between the two European capitals. In Oslo, he stayed at a three-star hotel located in the heart of the city centre for one night, which cost him £140. By contrast, in Riga, he booked a four-star hotel, also situated just one street away from the main attractions, for a mere £62 per night.
After exploring his luxurious room, Chapman exclaimed in his video: "We're in the heart of the city centre, literally one street away from the main stuff. Four-star hotel. £62 a night. Now that's tasty. For a capital city, for the middle of the city centre that's a bit mad isn't it?" He added, "Bearing in mind in Oslo I stayed in a three-star hotel, also bang in the city centre and that was £140 for a night there. Less than half price that's crazy."
