UEFA Unveils Major Reforms for Euro Qualifiers and Nations League

UEFA is set to introduce a Champions League-style qualification format for European national teams ahead of the 2030 World Cup, aiming to enhance competitive balance and reduce meaningless matches. The new system will place the 36 highest-ranked countries into three groups of 12 in League A, utilising a 'Swiss system' where each team plays six opponents. League A group winners will secure direct qualification for the Euro or World Cup finals, with other spots decided via play-offs involving teams from both League A and League B.

Key Changes to the Qualification Process

The format aims to improve competitive balance, reduce 'dead matches', and create a more dynamic competition without increasing the number of international fixtures. This approach mirrors the successful model used in the UEFA Champions League, ensuring that more matches have significance for qualification.

Revised Nations League Format

Additionally, UEFA plans to revise the Nations League from the 2028-29 edition, moving to three leagues of 18 teams each, divided into three groups of six. This restructuring is designed to provide more competitive matchups and maintain interest throughout the tournament.

UEFA confirmed the changes after extensive consultations with member associations, emphasising that the new system will not increase the total number of international matchdays. The reforms are expected to be implemented gradually, with the first qualifiers under the new format beginning in 2028.
