Aer Lingus has plunged summer travel plans into disarray by cancelling hundreds of flights, as the airline grapples with mandatory maintenance on its aircraft. This move exacerbates an already chaotic travel season, leaving thousands of passengers facing significant disruptions.
Widespread Flight Cancellations Announced
According to documents obtained by the Irish Independent, Aer Lingus is cutting "more than 500" flights from its summer schedule. These cancellations affect routes from Dublin, Shannon, and Cork airports, impacting domestic, European, and transatlantic journeys during the peak travel period.
The airline has stated that these schedule changes apply to approximately two per cent of its overall operations. In response, Aer Lingus is working to minimise inconvenience by rescheduling most passengers on alternative same-day services wherever possible.

A spokesperson for Aer Lingus explained the situation, saying: "Aer Lingus has commenced operating its planned summer schedule. A number of recent cancellations have been required due to mandatory maintenance on aircraft, along with a limited number of schedule adjustments."
The spokesperson added: "Where schedule adjustments are being made, the vast majority of customers are being reaccommodated on same-day services." This reassures passengers that efforts are being made to mitigate the impact, though the scale of cancellations suggests many will still face travel hurdles.
New Passport Requirements for UK-Ireland Travel
In a related development, Aer Lingus has joined Ryanair in implementing stricter identification rules for passengers travelling between Great Britain and Ireland. As of 25 February 2026, all customers must now carry a valid passport or Irish passport card.
Previously, Aer Lingus accepted a wide range of photo IDs, such as bus passes, work ID cards, or international student cards. The carrier's spokesperson confirmed to The Independent: "All customers, including Irish or British nationals, travelling on Aer Lingus and Aer Lingus Regional services between the Republic of Ireland and the UK will now require a valid passport or Irish passport card. The other forms of photo ID previously accepted will no longer be valid for travel."
