Logan Airport Remote Terminal Opens 25 Miles Away

In a groundbreaking move for air travel, Boston's Logan International Airport is set to open a remote terminal located nearly 25 miles away in Framingham, Massachusetts, on June 1. This first-of-its-kind facility, known as the Logan Airport Remote Terminal, will allow passengers to complete check-in, baggage drop, and Transportation Security Administration (TSA) screening before boarding a dedicated shuttle bus that transports them directly to their airside gate at Logan.

Pilot Phase Details

During its initial pilot phase, the service will be exclusively available to Delta Air Lines and JetBlue passengers traveling on flights scheduled between 5:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Hourly shuttle buses will operate from 4 a.m. to 1 p.m., with tickets priced at $9 each way. The Framingham site, located at 19 Flutie Pass, also offers approximately 400 parking spaces at a rate of $7 per day—significantly cheaper than parking rates at Logan Airport.

Benefits and Inspiration

The initiative aims to provide a more seamless and convenient travel experience by reducing the stress associated with airport queues and congestion. It is modeled after similar systems operated by The Landline Company in other major U.S. cities, such as those connecting regional airports to hubs. TSA Acting Administrator has highlighted the challenges faced by agents during the government shutdown, noting that some have resorted to sleeping in their cars and donating blood to make ends meet. This remote terminal could alleviate some of the pressure on airport security staff by distributing passenger flow.

Travelers using the remote terminal can expect a streamlined process, with the shuttle service ensuring they arrive at their gate without the hassle of navigating busy airport terminals. This innovation represents a significant shift in how airports and airlines approach passenger processing, potentially setting a precedent for other airports across the nation.
