Ryanair has announced a significant change to its check-in procedures for passengers who wish to check in luggage. Starting 10 November, the airline will require travellers to complete check-in and bag drop at least 60 minutes before the scheduled departure time, an increase from the previous 40-minute deadline. This new rule will apply across all Ryanair airports.
Reason for the Change
The airline stated that the adjustment is designed to give passengers more time to clear airport security and passport control, thereby reducing the number of missed flights. A spokesperson for Ryanair explained that the move is partly a response to delays experienced by some passengers at passport control due to the upcoming EU entry-exit system (EES). The EES is expected to introduce additional checks for non-EU travellers, which could lead to longer queues.
Impact on Passengers
The change primarily affects the 20 per cent of Ryanair passengers who check in luggage. Those travelling with only hand luggage will not be impacted, as they can still proceed directly to security and the departure gate. To accommodate the new deadline, Ryanair will open its check-in desks earlier at all airports, ensuring that passengers have sufficient time to drop off their bags.
Self-Service Kiosks
In addition to the rule change, Ryanair is installing self-service bag drop kiosks at over 95 per cent of its airports before October. These kiosks are intended to streamline the check-in process and reduce waiting times for passengers. The airline believes that the combination of earlier desk openings and self-service technology will help passengers adapt to the new requirements.
Ryanair has advised all passengers with checked luggage to arrive at the airport well in advance of the 60-minute cut-off to avoid any inconvenience. The airline emphasised that the change is part of its ongoing efforts to improve punctuality and customer experience.
