New York State Police have arrested a 24-year-old man in connection with a devastating fire at The Knights Inn in Endwell that killed at least six people. Tyler J. Russel has been charged with six counts of second-degree manslaughter and one count of fourth-degree arson.
Fire Broke Out Early Monday Morning
The blaze erupted shortly after 6 a.m. on Monday, prompting a massive emergency response. Fire crews from Endwell Fire Department arrived to find heavy black smoke at the front of the building and flames visible from the rear. The fire spread rapidly through the motel, forcing terrified guests to flee their rooms.
At least six people lost their lives in the inferno, though their identities have not yet been publicly released. Police have not disclosed what led to Russel's arrest, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Community Response and Support
In the aftermath, the Red Cross is providing assistance to displaced residents, accepting donations of clothing and hygiene products. Vestal United Methodist Church has opened its doors as a temporary shelter, though officials stated the shelter is not currently accepting food donations.
Multiple agencies are involved in the investigation, including fire investigators, emergency management teams, and local law enforcement. The cause of the fire has been deemed deliberate, though further details have not been released.
