Parents Issued Paddling Pool Safety Alert as 40°C Heatwave Hits UK
Paddling Pool Safety Alert as UK Braces for 40°C Heatwave

As the UK braces for a heatwave with temperatures predicted to reach 40°C, many families are turning to paddling pools to stay cool. However, children's toy specialists at Outdoortoys are urging parents to exercise caution. Alex Price, product manager at Outdoortoys, emphasised the importance of safety checks before use. "Paddling pools are a fun way to cool off, but it's vital to ensure the water is safe for young children," he said.

Water Temperature Risks for Young Children

Price warned that filling a pool with cold water from a hose can be dangerous for babies and toddlers. "Cold water can lead to discomfort, chills, or even hypothermia if young children stay in it for too long," he explained. The optimum temperature for children's paddling pools in the UK is between 29°C and 31°C. Price recommends using a bath thermometer to check the water temperature. "If it's too cold, top up with warmer water or consider playing earlier in the day when temperatures are higher," he advised.

Essential Cleaning Before First Use

Paddling pools stored over winter can harbour dust, mould, or bacteria. Price suggests cleaning with a vinegar solution: one part white vinegar to one part warm water. "Pay close attention to folds, seams, and inflatable rings where dirt and mould can build up," he said. After cleaning, rinse thoroughly with fresh water and allow the pool to air dry completely before filling.

Keeping Pools Safe Around Pets

Households with pets need to be vigilant. "Dogs and other animals can carry mud, bacteria, and loose hair into the water, even if they're just running through the garden," Price noted. This can affect water quality and pose a risk to children. He recommends refreshing the water regularly and changing it entirely if pets have access to the area.

Constant Supervision Is Critical

Price stressed that even 2 cm of water can pose a drowning risk to young children. "Drowning can happen quickly and silently, without splashing or shouting," he said. He advises staying within arm's reach of younger children and avoiding distractions like phones or reading. Paddling pools should be emptied immediately after use or securely covered to prevent accidents.

Post-Use Pool Care

After use, covering or emptying the pool is essential for safety and hygiene. "A cover helps keep leaves and debris out, making your next swim even more enjoyable," Price added. For more information, visit Outdoortoys' paddling pool safety guide.
