Emmerdale fans have expressed frustration over a perceived blunder involving newcomer Serena Sugden, with many branding her rapid employment at The Woolpack as 'silly' and 'far-fetched'. Serena, played by Casey Al-Shaqsy, made her debut on the ITV soap last month when she attempted to assist a distressed Charity Dingle, who had been the victim of a vile sexual assault by evil Dr Todd.
Instant Employment Sparks Outrage
Viewers took to social media to vent their disbelief after Serena quickly secured a job behind the bar at The Woolpack, seemingly without any prior experience or formal interview. One fan fumed on a Coronation Street Facebook fan page: 'How has Serena got a job behind bar so fast?' Another echoed: 'So far-fetched.' A third simply declared: 'Silly!'
The backlash continued as another viewer commented: 'I was just thinking that myself.' A fifth penned: 'Yes my daughter asked “why is it so easy to get a job in Emmerdale and Corrie? You just walk into the pub and they offer you a job!”'
Serena's Arrival and Family Ties
Serena's introduction to the village involved bonding with Charity Dingle and revealing to Robert Sugden that her grandfather was Robert's father's cousin, establishing her as a Sugden relative. She quickly settled into village life, building connections with locals before landing the barmaid role. The speed of her employment has been a major point of contention among fans.
Actress Reacts to Role
Speaking about joining the soap, Casey Al-Shaqsy expressed her excitement: 'I would say it feels amazing to be a Sugden. It feels like I'm becoming a very small part of history actually.' She added: 'She's going to mingle with a lot of different characters, I think, and I'm very, very happy about that because there's some incredible legends and amazing actors and people to work with.'
The actress also teased Serena's personality: 'So Serena as a person, I'd say she puts her foot in her mouth quite a lot. She's quite loud and a little bit outspoken. I do think there's elements of both good and bad in her. She's come into a lovely family situation. Or is it lovely? You'll see.'
Emmerdale airs Monday to Friday at 8:00pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
