Kate Garraway has opened up about her new relationship with economist Liam Halligan for the first time, describing it as 'lovely' during an appearance at the Chelsea Flower Show. The Good Morning Britain presenter, 59, was seen supporting Halligan last week at a charity cycling event from London to Paris, sparking romance rumours as the pair were photographed cuddling and smiling widely.
Early Days of Romance
Liam Halligan, an Irish-British economist and journalist who hosts The Telegraph's Planet Normal podcast, was reportedly friendly with Kate's late husband Derek Draper. In a recent piece for The Spectator, Halligan described the relationship as early days but with a 'definite spark'. Speaking at the Chelsea Flower Show, Garraway told The Mirror: 'It is lovely. I suppose it is!' She admitted they have barely had time for a proper date and was cautious not to 'jinx' anything.
Life After Derek Draper
Kate was widowed in January 2024 when Derek Draper died after a long battle with Covid-19. The couple married in 2005 and had two children, Darcey, 20, and Billy, 16. Since his death, Kate has appeared on Celebrity Traitors, The Masked Singer, and continues to host Life Stories, which she took over from Piers Morgan in 2022.
When asked about plans for proper dates, Kate revealed that Liam had been asking the same question. 'He says to me, 'Now we're in the papers, is there a chance we can actually have some dates?' But my mum and dad have not been very well so I’ve been really consumed by that,' she explained.
A Bit of Light Relief
Kate acknowledged that the romance provides some light relief, saying, 'Yes. It’s lovely. And it’s lovely to have you all caring!' She also spoke about her garden, confessing it is currently 'shameful' due to lack of time, but expressed her love for gardening as a therapeutic hobby.
