Consumer interest in non-toxic cookware has surged as shoppers become more aware of harmful chemicals in traditional non-stick coatings. Searches for stainless-steel frying pans have increased by 31 per cent, cast-iron pans by 17 per cent, and ceramic pans by 60 per cent, according to John Lewis data. A Circulon survey of 2,000 adults found that 43 per cent worry about non-stick coating flaking into food.
What Makes a Frying Pan Non-Toxic?
Traditional non-stick pans often use synthetic chemicals like PFAS, PTFE, PFOA, lead, or cadmium. Non-toxic alternatives include stainless steel, cast iron, and ceramic coatings. Becky Firth, head of product at Meyer UK (manufacturer of Circulon), explains: “Interest in this specific type of cookware has grown rapidly with a developing shopper awareness of PFAS – most commonly denoted as forever chemicals – in turn heightening both health and environmental concerns.” She adds that shoppers should focus on materiality and durability, with stainless steel being the most versatile option.
