Two Kitchen Items Keep Maggots Out of Bins: Cayenne and Cinnamon
Cayenne and Cinnamon: Kitchen Items to Keep Maggots Out of Bins

Flies and maggots can become a major nuisance around wheelie bins during the summer, but a simple solution using two common kitchen spices can help keep them at bay. According to a life hacks expert on Instagram, cayenne pepper and cinnamon are effective deterrents that target flies' senses and prevent them from laying eggs.

How the Kitchen Spices Work

The expert, who runs an Instagram account sharing "dad hacks," explained in a video that sprinkling cayenne pepper and cinnamon in the bottom of bins can stop infestations before they start. "Most people forget about their trash cans until they're infested with bugs, but you can stop this from happening before temperatures get hotter. Grab cayenne pepper and cinnamon from your spice cabinet," he said.

The method involves sprinkling both spices in the bottom of wheelie bins, kitchen bins, food waste caddies, or any area prone to flies. After placing a bin liner as normal, the spices should be reapplied each time the liner is changed. The expert noted: "The capsaicin in the cayenne pepper irritates the fly's senses and drives them away. The cinnamon stops them from laying eggs altogether."

Scientific Basis for the Hack

The hack is backed by science. Capsaicin, the chemical compound that gives chilli peppers their heat, has a strong odour that overwhelms a fly's sense of smell. Contact with cayenne pepper can also sting a fly's feet, prompting it to flee. Cinnamon, meanwhile, contains natural oils that are toxic to insects and can disrupt their nervous systems, making it difficult for flies to lay eggs.

This combination of spices offers a natural, chemical-free way to deter pests without relying on vinegar or baking soda, which are common household cleaning agents often suggested for similar purposes.

Additional Natural Fly Deterrents

Beyond the spice hack, several other natural solutions can help keep flies out of homes and gardens. Herbs such as basil and mint are known to repel flies; placing potted plants on windowsills can be effective. Lavender and marigold plants in gardens or near doors and windows also deter flies. Coffee grounds, when roasted in an oven for 15 minutes, release an aroma that repels flies while being pleasant for humans.

Maintaining a clean living space is also crucial. Covering food on kitchen surfaces, using tightly sealed food waste bins, and opting for biodegradable food waste bags can reduce fly attractants. These measures, combined with the spice hack, can significantly reduce fly and maggot problems during the warm summer months.
