Health Secretary Wes Streeting has issued a stark warning to resident doctors, stating that if they proceed with a planned six-day strike after Easter, the economic repercussions of the Iran war could eliminate any chance of a better pay offer in the future. This announcement came during a Commons address, following an OECD report indicating that the conflict will harm the UK's economy more severely than any other industrialised nation.
Economic Consequences of Prolonged Conflict
Streeting emphasised that the government is preparing for a prolonged conflict with Iran, which would inevitably impact the economy and public finances. He argued that in such a scenario, future offers to resident doctors would not surpass the current proposal, which includes an average pay rise of 4.9% this year and increased starting salaries for new graduates.
BMA's Strike Plans and Government Response
The British Medical Association (BMA) recently announced plans for the strike after rejecting the government's pay deal. Streeting described this move as "deeply disappointing," noting that it followed months of constructive talks. He highlighted that the deal would provide three years of guaranteed pay rises, reimbursement of exam fees, and more job opportunities.
Streeting urged the BMA to reconsider, setting a deadline of next Thursday to call off the strike action. He warned that if the strike proceeds, funds allocated for the pay offer might be redirected to minimise disruption in the NHS. The health secretary also expressed frustration over the BMA's resident doctors committee refusing to meet with him since he took office, calling it "extraordinary" in the current circumstances.
Impact on Public Services and Patience Waning
The government's tolerance for disruptive strikes is diminishing, Streeting stated, as such actions undermine critical public services like the NHS. He reiterated the UK's desire for de-escalation in Iran but stressed the need for prudent planning based on a prolonged conflict, which could further strain economic resources.
