Miranda Hart Opens Up About Ankle Injury and Healthcare Anxiety in Personal Update
Comedian Miranda Hart has publicly shared details of a recent ankle injury that has left her struggling to walk, while also revealing her ongoing anxiety related to a deep-seated fear of healthcare. In a candid Facebook post on Wednesday, the 53-year-old star, best known for her BBC sitcom Miranda, posted a fresh-faced selfie to update fans on her health challenges.
Health Struggles and Medical Fears
Miranda explained that she had gone over on her ankle and is unable to walk properly, requiring assistance from a friend to visit a physiotherapist. She expressed feelings of exhaustion and significant anxiety, stating that anything medical is a massive fear for her, making even a trip to a physio clinic terrifying. She noted, "I may be able to get on stage at the O2 and do a stand up set but I am a wreck even walking or driving past a hospital for example."
This admission comes amid her broader health journey, detailed in her 2024 autobiography, I Haven't Been Entirely Honest with You. In the book, she recounts a three-decade battle with health issues that initially led to a misdiagnosis of agoraphobia before she was correctly diagnosed with Lyme disease, which later developed into chronic fatigue syndrome, also known as myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME). This condition left her bedbound and without joy for years.
Reflections on Social Media and Misunderstanding
In her Facebook post, Miranda also addressed the dangers of projection and comparison on social media. She warned against assuming others' lives are perfect based on online photos, sharing a story about a friend who was told her life was ideal, leading to tears because she had endured significant hardships, including a stroke at a young age. Miranda emphasized the importance of empathy, writing, "We all need to treat ourselves as fellow humans in a struggle at the same time in history. Circumstances do not dictate the internal."
She concluded by encouraging kindness towards oneself and others, noting that understanding people behind their external masks can foster compassion and personal freedom.
Long-Term Health Battle and Medical Insights
Miranda's health struggles were compounded by a 33-year delay in diagnosing her Lyme disease, during which time she was incorrectly labeled as agoraphobic. In her book extract, she described feeling increasingly alone as doctors failed to identify the cause of her symptoms. She expressed frustration with medical professionals who downplayed her condition, saying, "Oh, it seemed not only implausible, but downright mean. Frankly, I would have punched someone in the face had they coolly said this to me when I was collapsed with exhaustion."
She also shared insights into coping with chronic illness, advocating for acceptance rather than resistance to pain. Miranda wrote about the theory that much suffering stems from resisting pain, and she has worked towards confronting her health issues compassionately to ease her distress.
Career and Personal Life
Miranda Hart rose to fame with her self-titled sitcom in 2009 and later starred in Call The Midwife as Chummy from 2012 to 2015. She did not return for the sixth series of the drama due to ill health. In her autobiography, she also revealed that she married surveyor Richard Fairs, adding a personal dimension to her public disclosures.
Her story highlights the complexities of living with chronic conditions and the emotional toll of medical fears, resonating with many who face similar challenges.
