Mum's Persistence Uncovers Teen's Leukaemia After Symptoms Were Dismissed
A mother's determined advocacy for her son has highlighted critical concerns in medical diagnosis after doctors allegedly overlooked severe symptoms that later proved to be acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. Sixteen-year-old Kit Chester-Canavan from Bushey, Hertfordshire, endured agonising back pain and dramatic weight loss before his mother, Amanda Chester, demanded a blood test that revealed the life-threatening condition.
Initial Symptoms and Medical Response
Kit first experienced intermittent back pain in April last year, with episodes lasting three to four days. Following a bicycle accident in October, the discomfort intensified to what he described as "real agony." Upon visiting his GP, Kit was initially diagnosed with a musculoskeletal issue. However, when the pain persisted for a month and Amanda noticed her son had lost fifteen pounds, they returned to the surgery.
The family claims medical professionals attempted to attribute Kit's symptoms to a viral infection, prompting Amanda to insist on further investigation. "If I hadn't shouted for the blood test, would we be in a different position?" Amanda questioned. "They should've been able to see something bigger was going on, that there were red flags."
Diagnosis and Treatment Journey
The blood test results showed dangerously elevated inflammation levels, leading to Kit's diagnosis of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (B Type) on November 28, 2025. The fit and active Arsenal supporter, who had previously enjoyed good health, was shocked by the news. "When she told me I had leukaemia, I almost laughed because I was so shocked," Kit recalled.
His treatment at University College Hospital London (UCLH) involves chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and bone marrow examinations, with doctors estimating a two-year recovery period. Throughout this process, Kit will have a PICC line fitted in his arm, restricting many of his favourite activities.
Family Impact and Fundraising Efforts
Amanda has launched a fundraising campaign to support the Teenage Cancer Trust and provide Kit with future goals during his challenging treatment. "It's two years of treatment when he should be going to parties and doing all those things a lad his age should," Amanda explained. "That's why the fundraiser is important—I want him to have something to look forward to."
Kit's younger brother, Bodie, 14, has found the situation particularly difficult, while Amanda grapples with maternal concerns. "As a mum, it's really upsetting because you do all this stuff and it makes no difference," she shared. "You're left wondering: 'what did I do wrong?'"
Kit's Resilience and Future Aspirations
Despite the challenges, Kit maintains remarkable positivity, describing his situation as "a David vs Goliath battle" from which he'll emerge stronger. He dreams of an adventurous trip through Vietnam, Thailand, and Bali, culminating in a bungee jump in New Zealand—a goal he's cherished since childhood.
"I really, really want to go to Asia," Kit expressed. "I'd love to explore the culture, eat the food. I want to go spear fishing and cook what I catch over an open fire."
The family has received significant support from charities and Arsenal Football Club, with players including Eberechi Eze, David Raya, Tommy Setford, and Jurrien Timber offering encouragement. Amanda remains hopeful about her son's recovery, praising his strength and courage throughout the ordeal.
"We're hopeful now," Amanda concluded. "He's so positive, which makes me proud. We use a lot of humour to get through it, and he's just got an incredible ability to be so strong and courageous."
