Trump Withdraws Canada's Invitation to 'Board of Peace'

Donald Trump has withdrawn an invitation for Canada to join his 'board of peace' initiative, a day after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney criticised the US president at the World Economic Forum in Davos. In a Truth Social post on Thursday, Trump said the board was withdrawing its invitation to Canada, which had previously accepted in principle.

The board, chaired by Trump, was launched at Davos as a temporary body to oversee the governance and reconstruction of Gaza. Permanent members are required to pay $1bn each. While Canada had accepted in principle, Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne said on Tuesday that Canada did not plan to pay the fee.

In a speech at Davos on Tuesday, Carney described a 'rupture' in the rules-based world order caused by Trump's aggressive behaviour. Trump responded on Wednesday by saying, 'Canada lives because of the United States.' Carney retorted on Thursday: 'Canada thrives because we are Canadian.'

The board's establishment was endorsed by a UN Security Council resolution as part of Trump's Gaza peace plan. Member nations include Argentina, Bahrain, Morocco, Pakistan and Turkey, while Britain, France and Italy have declined to join for now.
