A 300-1 shot has equalled the record for the longest-priced winner in modern horse racing history after a stunning triumph at Kelso. Crokes Cross, trained by Stuart Coltherd, won the two-mile novice hurdle on her British debut, delivering a first victory since March 2025 for the yard.
The five-year-old mare, ridden by Jamie Hamilton, stayed on strongly to beat stablemate Changemyluck (5-2) by a length and a quarter. The victory matches the feat of Blowers, who won at 300-1 at Exeter in December, and surpasses the previous record of 250-1 set by Equinoctial at Kelso in 1990.
Coltherd, speaking to Racing TV, admitted he did not back the winner: 'I never had a penny on, I wish I had! I knew they were both fit and I fancied them both to run well. I thought Changemyluck would be there or thereabouts, but Crokes Cross has done it well.' He added that the season had been frustrating, with horses placed but not winning.
Ladbrokes reported that one punter backed Crokes Cross each-way at 300-1, winning £1,800 from a £5 stake. Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: 'Just a handful of punters across the UK backed Crokes Cross at 300-1 this afternoon but this bet is by far the standout... £1.8k from a £5 each-way single will take some beating this weekend.'
