Airbnb Hosts Face Empty Bookings Ahead Of World Cup

Airbnb hosts in the United States are experiencing a downturn in bookings ahead of the 2026 World Cup, with many reporting empty calendars despite high expectations. The American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) has released a report indicating that hotel bookings are well below projections in almost every host city, a trend that also affects short-term rental platforms like Airbnb.

The AHLA report attributes the shortfall to high match ticket prices, local transport and tax costs, and the political backdrop, which have deterred international visitors. The association warns that the anticipated economic lift from the tournament may fall short, as fewer overseas fans are booking accommodation. This is particularly concerning for hosts who invested heavily based on official projections of a surge in tourism.

Fifa has been criticised for block-booking a large number of hotel rooms, which the AHLA says created artificial demand and inflated prices. When Fifa later cancelled many of these reservations, it left a vacuum of availability, further depressing bookings. Fifa rejects these claims, stating that all room releases were conducted in line with contractual agreements and that it maintained consistent communication with hotel partners.

Despite the current slump, the AHLA expects occupancy to strengthen in June and July as fans finalise their plans. A spokesman said: 'We know that many fans are still waiting on tickets and schedules to become clearer before finalising plans. We believe bookings will pick up in the weeks ahead.' Airbnb has also expressed optimism, stating that the World Cup is on course to be the 'biggest hosting event in Airbnb's history'.
