The Scottish National Party (SNP) has announced plans to force a vote on Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer's future by tabling an amendment to the King's Speech. The move comes as pressure continues to mount on the Prime Minister, with several ministers resigning and Labour-affiliated unions calling for a new party leader.
SNP Westminster Leader Speaks Out
New SNP Westminster leader Dave Doogan stated that the “leadership circus can’t go on any longer” and urged Labour MPs to take a stance on the Prime Minister’s position if he does not resign. “This farce has to end now so Parliament can focus on the issues that really matter,” Mr Doogan said. “It’s clear the only way that can happen is for Keir Starmer to go. He has lost the confidence of voters and his own MPs, and there’s no coming back from that.”
King's Speech Overshadowed by Crisis
The King’s Speech, scheduled for Wednesday, will outline 35 bills that form Sir Keir’s legislative agenda for the coming year. However, the event is expected to be overshadowed by the ongoing crisis in Downing Street. Mr Doogan emphasised that if Labour Cabinet ministers do not act, Parliament must intervene. “Unless they put an end to this chaos now, the SNP will table a motion of no confidence in Keir Starmer to draw things to a close,” he added.
Call for Scottish Independence
Mr Doogan framed the political turmoil as evidence of the need for Scottish independence. “After the past decade of Brexit, austerity cuts, six prime ministers, a neverending cost-of-living crisis and the looming threat of Nigel Farage in control of the UK it’s clearer than ever that Scotland needs a fresh start with independence,” he said. The UK Government has been contacted for comment.
