In a record-breaking semi-final at the Wankhede Stadium, India defeated England by seven runs to reach the T20 World Cup final. The match saw the highest aggregate runs in a T20 World Cup game, with 499 runs scored, and a tournament-record 34 sixes. India's 253 for five was their highest total in T20 World Cup history, while England's 246 for eight was their third-highest in the format.
England's Jacob Bethell scored a magnificent 105 off 48 balls, his maiden T20 international century, to keep his side in the contest. However, India's Jasprit Bumrah bowled a crucial 18th over, conceding just six runs, which effectively ended England's chase. England needed 48 off the last three overs but could only manage 40, despite Jofra Archer hitting three sixes off the final three legal deliveries.
India's innings was powered by Sanju Samson's 89 off 42 balls and Tilak Varma's 72 off 42. Samson was dropped by England captain Harry Brook in the third over, a moment that proved costly as he added 74 runs after the reprieve. India's 19 sixes in their innings was also a tournament record.
England's bowling attack struggled, with Archer and Sam Curran conceding the most and third-most runs by an England bowler in a T20 World Cup match. Despite the defeat, England stayed in the game until the final moments, matching India's run rate at several stages. India will now face New Zealand in the final on Sunday.
