Cristiano Ronaldo could still feature at the 2030 World Cup, according to his former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen. The Portuguese forward, who will be 41 during this summer's tournament, has hinted that retirement is approaching. However, Meulensteen believes the veteran striker might perform a dramatic u-turn and continue playing for another four years.
Meulensteen's Confidence in Ronaldo
Speaking to Goal, Meulensteen said: "Health permitting, you look at him, he's 41, but biologically he's probably in his early thirties. It's a case where the mind goes, the rest will follow. There's no doubt he looks after himself in the best possible way."
He added: "I saw the other day that Ronaldo's son was on the team sheet at Al-Nassr. That might be one of the challenges he still wants to achieve—to play with him. That would be unique. If he stays injury-free and keeps fresh, we'll have to see what happens with Portugal. He would possibly be the oldest player at the World Cup. It will definitely play on his mind, especially with the 2030 World Cup being co-hosted by Portugal, Spain, and Morocco. That's not too far!"
Ronaldo's Own Stance
Despite Meulensteen's backing, Ronaldo himself has ruled out appearing at a sixth World Cup. Earlier this season, he stated: "Definitely, yes. I will be 41 years old and I think this will be the moment in the big competition." He added: "When I mean soon, it's probably one or two years I'll still be in the game."
Ronaldo has amassed 226 caps for Portugal since his debut in 2003, scoring 143 goals. He heads into this year's World Cup in impressive form, having netted 28 goals in 34 appearances for Al-Nassr this season. Portugal are set to begin their group stage campaign against DR Congo, followed by matches against Uzbekistan and Colombia.
This summer's World Cup will be Ronaldo's fifth, and while he has suggested it will be his last, Meulensteen's comments add intrigue to the possibility of an extended international career.
