Tottenham Captain Romero Ruled Out for Season with Knee Injury

Cristian Romero has been ruled out for the remainder of the season after sustaining a knee injury during Tottenham's 1-0 defeat to Sunderland. The Argentine defender, who is expected to be sidelined for six to eight weeks, was seen with heavy strapping on his right knee in a social media video.

Romero left the pitch in tears after colliding with goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky in the 70th minute at the Stadium of Light. The incident occurred when Sunderland striker Brian Brobbey appeared to push Romero into Kinsky, forcing the Spurs captain off for lengthy treatment before being substituted.

Manager Roberto De Zerbi confirmed the injury after the match, saying: 'Maybe yes [it is a knee injury], but I don't want to say anything until we know more. We have to see in the next few days. I hope it's not an important problem because he's a crucial player for us.'

The defeat leaves Tottenham two points from safety in the Premier League relegation zone, having lost seven of their last eight games. De Zerbi's side now face Brighton at home this weekend, desperately seeking their first win of 2025.

Romero joins Mohammed Kudus on the sidelines, with the Ghanaian also ruled out for the season due to a quad injury. Spurs are assessing whether Kudus requires surgery.
