Elon Musk Predicts Human Driving Will Be a Niche Activity in 10 Years
Musk: Human Driving a Niche Activity in 10 Years

Elon Musk has predicted that within five to ten years, approximately 90% of all distance driven will be by artificial intelligence in self-driving cars, making human driving a niche activity. The Tesla CEO made the remarks as the company plans to expand its fully self-driving car services nationwide across the United States later this year, following an initial rollout in Texas.

Current Robotaxi Challenges

Current Tesla robotaxi services in Austin, Dallas, and Houston have encountered several issues, including long wait times, frequent unavailability, and inconvenient drop-off locations, according to Reuters reporters who tested the service. Despite these setbacks, Musk remains confident in the technology's trajectory.

Recent Recalls and Safety Concerns

Both Tesla and Alphabet-owned Waymo recently issued recalls for safety defects. Tesla recalled vehicles for delayed rearview camera images, while Waymo recalled its vehicles due to a risk of entering flooded roads at high speeds. These recalls highlight ongoing challenges in the autonomous driving sector.

SpaceX and Neuralink Updates

Musk also provided updates on his other ventures. He discussed SpaceX's progress toward reusable rocket launch systems and revealed that Neuralink plans to conduct its first implant of the Blindsight device, which aims to assist individuals with impaired vision. Additionally, Musk predicted that widespread humanoid robots could become a reality within a decade.

In a broader context, Musk envisions a future where human driving becomes a rare activity, with AI taking over the vast majority of transportation. Despite regulatory and technical hurdles, the expansion of Tesla's self-driving capabilities continues to move forward.
