Beat the Heatwave: Press This Button to Keep Your Car Cool on Long Drives
Press This Button to Keep Your Car Cool in a Heatwave

Long-distance driving can be challenging, especially during a heatwave. The RAC has shared a simple yet effective tip to keep your car cooler for longer: press the recirculation button.

How to Keep Your Car Cool

Before setting off, the RAC recommends opening both windows on one side of the car and 'fanning' the interior by swinging a door on the opposite side back and forth. Repeat this at least three times to expel hot air. Keep the sunroof shut if parked in sunlight.

Using Air Conditioning Effectively

Start the engine and set the air conditioning to its coldest setting. Select the 'external' air setting (arrow entering the car) rather than recirculation. Open all remaining windows, as the AC takes a few minutes to cool. Direct air through footwell vents to push warm air upwards and out.

Once the car begins to cool, slowly close the windows. For vehicles without AC, keep windows open and fans on the coolest setting to improve ventilation.

The Recirculation Button Trick

Finally, when the AC is blowing cold, shut all windows and switch to recirculated air. This button traps cool air inside, making it colder on each pass. Without it, you're drawing in hot outside air, which takes longer to cool. This advice is supported by motoring experts and can make a significant difference on hot journeys.
