Tragic Trench Collapse Claims Life of Construction Worker in Texas
A construction worker has died after being buried alive when a utility trench collapsed at a subdivision development in the Houston suburbs. The fatal incident occurred on Saturday morning at the Marygold Homes development site in Conroe, Texas, where the worker was engaged in drainage operations.
Emergency Response and Rescue Efforts
The Conroe Fire Department reported that two workers became trapped when dirt suddenly fell into the trench, burying them beneath the soil. Firefighters were dispatched to the construction site at 11.55am following reports of trapped workers, arriving on scene by 12.02pm. However, rescuers faced significant challenges reaching the trench, which was situated approximately 1,000 feet from the main road through difficult terrain.
Multiple emergency agencies responded to the scene, including Montgomery County Emergency Service Districts 9 and 1, The Woodlands Fire Department, and the Montgomery County Office of Emergency Management. Crews worked for more than an hour using specialized equipment to extract the trapped workers from the collapsed trench.
Outcome of Rescue Operation
The first worker was successfully extricated from the trench just before 1pm and transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Tragically, the second worker was recovered about fifteen minutes later but did not survive the incident. He was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency personnel.
During the rescue operation, a third construction worker at the site suffered a medical emergency unrelated to the collapse. Paramedics treated this individual on site before releasing him.
Investigation and Official Response
Conroe Police Chief Jon Buckholtz has issued condolences to the deceased worker's family and pledged a thorough investigation into the incident. The Conroe Police Department is leading the investigation, with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) having been notified and expected to conduct its own inquiry.
OSHA's investigation will specifically examine whether proper work equipment was present in the trench at the time of the collapse. Officials have not yet released the identities of anyone involved in the tragedy.

The incident occurred at the construction site for the Marygold Homes development on Loop 336 in Conroe. Artemis One Development, the company that owns Marygold Homes, describes the community as offering residents a "hassle-free lifestyle" with amenities including landscaping, a swimming pool, and various recreational facilities.
The Marygold Homes project involves constructing condominiums across 19 acres on the eastern portion of Loop 336. It remains unclear which construction company Artemis One Development has hired to complete the building work.
Conroe Police Sergeant Sergio Jasso told the Houston Chronicle that construction workers on site were determined to dig their colleagues out and managed to rescue one worker alive. "Unfortunately, when the other co-worker was dug out, he was deceased," Jasso stated.
Chief Buckholtz has indicated that the police department will release additional details as they become available during the ongoing investigation into this workplace tragedy.
