Octopus Energy Unveils 300 'Zero Bills' Homes with Free Energy for a Decade
In a groundbreaking move to combat soaring energy costs, Octopus Energy has announced the launch of 300 "zero bills" homes in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire. Residents of these properties will not have to pay a single penny for gas and electricity for at least ten years, offering a significant reprieve from the ongoing energy crisis.
Partnership with Prosperity Group Drives Sustainable Development
The energy supplier has partnered with Prosperity Group to develop this new site, which is expected to be completed by 2028, with tenants moving in later that year. The homes will be equipped with advanced green technology, including heat pumps, battery storage systems, and solar panels, although the exact prices for these properties have not yet been disclosed.
This initiative comes at a critical time, as the energy price cap is set to rise again this summer due to higher oil costs following the war in Iran. Currently, the cap stands at £1,641 per year for the typical household, putting additional financial strain on consumers.
Expanding Zero Bills Homes Across the Globe
Octopus Energy has already approved over 6,000 "zero bills" homes through partnerships with leading developers. The available options include private rentals, privately owned properties, and shared ownership schemes. The company aims to deliver 100,000 Zero Bills homes by 2030, having already rolled out similar initiatives in Germany, France, New Zealand, and the UK.
Data from Octopus shows a surge in demand for energy-efficient solutions, with heat pump sales up by 103%, solar panel sales increasing by 78%, and enquiries for EV chargers rising by 42%. This trend reflects a growing effort among Britons to enhance their energy independence and reduce reliance on traditional energy sources.
Expert Insights on the Zero Bills Initiative
Nigel Banks, Zero Bills Director at Octopus Energy, commented: "We're finding ourselves in yet another energy crisis, and households are looking for ways to protect themselves from unpredictable energy prices. Living without a home energy bill is no longer a distant ambition – it's a reality thanks to our Zero Bills tariff. This partnership with Prosperity Group is a big step forward – together, we're bringing Zero Bills living to hundreds of homes and showing what's possible when smart tech is built in from day one."
Joe Billingham, Chairman of Prosperity Group, added: "Our focus has always been on delivering high-quality, forward-thinking developments for both our investors and customers. Working with Octopus Energy allows us to integrate cutting-edge technology that not only enhances the living experience but also supports long-term investment performance. With increasing regulatory pressure around EPC standards and tighter requirements on the horizon, schemes like this offer a clear route to future-proofing assets from day one, while meeting the growing demand for sustainable, energy-efficient homes."
Broader Context: Energy Suppliers Holding Billions in Customer Credit
This development coincides with new research from Uswitch, revealing that energy suppliers are sitting on £3 billion of customer credit, a figure that has increased by £179 million compared to last year. The average household is in credit by almost £200, prompting experts to urge consumers to check if they are eligible to claim some of this money back.
As energy costs continue to climb, initiatives like Octopus Energy's Zero Bills homes provide a promising solution for households seeking stability and sustainability in an unpredictable market.
