Carnival Splendor Cruise Ship Sees Second Tragedy as Passenger Jumps Overboard
An elderly passenger is presumed dead after appearing to jump overboard from the Carnival Splendor cruise ship, a tragic incident that occurred just hours after another passenger from the same vessel drowned during a snorkelling excursion. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) launched an intensive search and rescue mission, but it was ultimately unsuccessful, leading to the suspension of operations and the presumption of the man's death.
Details of the Overboard Incident
The passenger went overboard from the Carnival Splendor while the ship was sailing off the coast of Brisbane, Australia, in the early hours of the morning. According to reports, the ship's PA system issued a 'man overboard' alert at 1.44am, and tracking data indicates the vessel changed course at approximately 1.55am. The man's family had reported him missing to the crew prior to the alert.
Carnival Cruise Line informed 9News that CCTV footage captured the man climbing over the safety railing and jumping overboard. The search and rescue operation, which involved multiple air and sea assets, lasted for roughly 16 hours before being suspended at 5.30pm. An AMSA spokesperson stated, "Following an intensive air and sea search involving multiple assets, the missing person was not located and AMSA has now released all assets from tasking."
Context of the Previous Drowning
This overboard incident follows another tragedy involving the Carnival Splendor, where a 67-year-old Tasmanian woman drowned during a snorkelling trip on Friday morning. Police reported that she was found unresponsive in the water, adding to the sombre atmosphere on the ship. The vessel was sailing from Moreton Island towards Sydney when the overboard event unfolded overnight.
Response from Carnival Cruise Line
A spokesperson for Carnival Cruise said that all appropriate authorities have been alerted, and the company will assist with investigations upon the ship's return to Sydney. "Carnival's Care Team is supporting the guest's family and our thoughts and prayers are with them and their loved one," the spokesperson added, emphasising the company's commitment to providing support during this difficult time.
Ship Specifications and Operations
The Carnival Splendor is a large cruise ship capable of holding up to 3000 passengers and 1150 crew, with a length of 952 feet. It operates in the Australia, New Zealand, and South Pacific regions, offering various itineraries to travellers. This double tragedy has cast a shadow over its operations, raising concerns about passenger safety and emergency protocols on board.
The incidents highlight the unpredictable nature of maritime travel and the importance of robust safety measures. As investigations continue, authorities and Carnival Cruise Line are working to understand the circumstances surrounding both events, with a focus on preventing future occurrences and ensuring the well-being of all passengers and crew.
