Florida Teenager Survives Near-Fatal Neck Slashing in Random Boardwalk Assault

A 13-year-old Florida teenager was walking with his parents along the picturesque Daytona Beach Boardwalk when a man suddenly attacked him, slashing his throat in a violent and unprovoked assault that nearly proved fatal. Sullivan Clarke, aged 13, was strolling with his father Jerod and mother Lori around 10:05 PM on Saturday evening when the unknown assailant rushed towards him.

Deep Neck Wound Revealed Horrific Details

The teenager was looking at his mobile phone when the attacker cut his neck, leaving a gash so profound that his father described being able to peer inside the wound. "The crazy thing is I turned at the perfect time because I was on the phone and I looked up at the slingshot," Sullivan explained to local media. "That's how he got the side of my neck and not right here."

Medical professionals later informed the family that Sullivan would have died instantly had the blade penetrated just one millimeter deeper. Jerod Clarke recounted the terrifying moment, stating the wound was so deep he could "see the meat in his neck." The family expressed profound gratitude for their son's survival, with Jerod emphasizing, "We are so lucky our son's alive."

Arrest and Identification of the Assailant

Police quickly identified the random attacker as Jermaine Lynn Long, 44, arresting him the same night near the pier adjacent to Joe's Crab Shack. Long is currently detained at Volusia County Jail facing two counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, with his bond set at $50,000 according to official jail records.

Surveillance footage captured the assault on the teenage boy, providing crucial evidence for investigators. Witnesses on the boardwalk corroborated the family's account that the attack was completely unprovoked, with one observer urging parents to "be safe and always watch your kids" in the area.

Assailant's Extensive Criminal History

County records reveal Long possesses an extensive criminal background and is a registered sex offender. The charges following his attack on Sullivan represent his fifth felony case in Volusia County alone. His prior convictions include failure to properly register as a sex offender and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Most alarmingly, Long was released from jail on February 10 after prosecutors declined to pursue a January case where he allegedly attacked two men with an eight-foot pole and a kitchen knife. This release occurred just four days before his violent assault on the teenage boy.

During his arrest, authorities discovered a black boxcutter and a silver knife in Long's possession. He refused to speak with law enforcement and immediately requested legal representation.

Family's Harrowing Experience and Recovery

Sullivan's mother Lori initially believed the assailant was attempting to rob her son when she witnessed the attack. "He had sort of a strange look in his eyes," she recalled. "And then he went up to my son, and I saw this motion … and I thought, oh, he's stealing his phone."

The teenager was rushed to Halifax Health Medical Center for emergency treatment following the assault. Remarkably, Sullivan didn't immediately realize he had been cut until bystanders in a nearby vehicle alerted him to the severe neck wound.

Despite the traumatic experience and physical injuries, the resilient teenager returned to watch races at Daytona International Speedway the following day, with his father explaining they wanted to maintain normalcy for their son.

Family's Plea for Justice

The Clarke family has expressed strong concerns about public safety and the judicial system. Jerod Clarke stated unequivocally, "I want him locked up. There's no doubt in my mind he'll do it again if he gets out."

The family had spent an enjoyable day at the Daytona International Speedway prior to the terrifying evening attack, making the sudden violence even more shocking and traumatic for all involved.
