UK Terror Threat Level Under Review Amid Iran Strikes, Defence Secretary Confirms
UK Terror Threat Level Under Review Amid Iran Strikes

Defence Secretary John Healey has confirmed that the United Kingdom's terror threat level is currently under official review, as concerns mount over potential Iranian retaliation following a series of US and Israeli strikes in the Middle East. Speaking on Sunday, Mr Healey stated that the UK's "vigilance is high" amidst the escalating regional crisis.

Current Threat Level and Iranian Actions

The existing terror threat level in Britain is set at "substantial," which indicates that an attack is considered "likely." This classification represents the third tier out of five established by the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre (JTAC). The higher levels are "severe," meaning an attack is "highly likely," and "critical," which signifies an attack is "highly likely in the near future."

Mr Healey accused Iran of "lashing out in an increasingly indiscriminate and widespread way" after it launched retaliatory missiles and drones targeting locations across the Middle East, including the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Israel. He emphasised that when a regime behaves in such a manner, hitting both civilian and military targets, the UK's force protection in the region is at its highest level, and alertness domestically remains elevated.

Historical Context and Recent Incidents

The Defence Secretary highlighted that Iran has sponsored approximately 20 attempted terror attacks in the UK in recent years, all of which were successfully thwarted by security services. Additionally, he pointed to Iran's supply of 50,000 drones to Russia to support its ongoing war in Ukraine, underscoring the regime's broader destabilising activities.

"Iran and the regime he's led for so long, it's a source of evil. Murdering its own citizens and sponsoring and exporting terror, including to countries like Britain. And, the concern now, of course, is that this regime is lashing out," Mr Healey remarked. He expressed particular concern over attacks on non-military targets, such as civilian airports in Kuwait and hotels in Dubai and Bahrain.

Impact of Strikes and Regional Fallout

According to Iran's Red Crescent, US and Israeli attacks have killed at least 201 people across Iran, prompting retaliatory strikes that have resulted in several casualties, including three US service members. Iranian officials reported that at least 153 people died after a strike hit a girls' primary school in southern Iran.

Mr Healey earlier stated that British troops and civilians have been put at risk by Iran's "indiscriminate attacks." Since the strikes began, British military personnel in Bahrain were "within several hundred yards" of a retaliatory missile and drone strike on Saturday. Furthermore, two missiles were fired in the direction of Cyprus, heightening regional tensions.

The Defence Secretary's comments came during an interview with Sky News on Sunday morning, where he affirmed that the threat level review is underway, reflecting the UK's proactive stance in safeguarding national security amid the volatile Middle East situation.
