Battered Harry Potter First Edition Set to Fetch £4,000 at Auction
Harry Potter First Edition to Sell for £4,000 Despite Wear

A well-worn first edition paperback of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, which has been sitting on a bookshelf for years after being read multiple times, is predicted to sell for as much as £4,000 at auction. The book, owned by 37-year-old Naveed Younas, was given to him as a present when he was a child and has since gathered dust, but its value has soared due to rare printing mistakes that mark it as an early copy.

Childhood Treasure Turns into Valuable Collectible

Naveed Younas received the Harry Potter book as a gift in his youth and enjoyed it immensely, reading it frequently and moving on to the rest of the series. "I liked it very much, I read it quite a lot and went on to read the other Harry Potter books," Naveed explained. "It has been left on my shelf for a few years now, and I thought this would be a good time to pass it on to someone else who will appreciate it." Little did he know that this childhood treasure would become a highly sought-after item for collectors.

Printing Errors That Boost Rarity and Value

The book's value stems from specific anomalies that identify it as a first edition, first impression softcover printed by Bloomsbury in June 1997. Only 5,150 copies of this edition were produced, making it a rare find. Expert Robert French highlighted the key features: "This well-thumbed example has clearly been much-loved and read repeatedly – exactly what it was printed to do. There are some interesting anomalies which identify a first edition first printing of the book, either soft or hard cover."

Notable errors include:

  • On page 53, a list of school supplies from Hogwarts lists '1 wand' twice, both at the start and end.
  • On the back cover, the word 'philosopher's' is missing the letter 'o'.
  • The back cover refers to 'Hogwarts School of Wizardry and Witchcraft', which was later corrected to 'Witchcraft and Wizardry'.

Robert French added, "The most obvious tell-tale sign that you do not have a first impression is if the bottom of the front cover states that the book is 'a Triple Smarties Gold Award Winner'!" This edition lacks that later addition, confirming its early status.

Auction Details and Estimated Value

The book is being auctioned by Richard Winterton Auctioneers in Lichfield, Staffordshire, on 13 April. It is estimated to fetch between £3,000 and £4,000, a significant sum for a paperback that shows clear signs of use. In addition to the softcover copies, 500 hardback editions with the same text were also issued, but the softcover version remains particularly rare due to its limited print run and distinctive errors.

This sale highlights the enduring popularity and collectibility of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series, where even well-used copies can command high prices if they possess unique historical features. For Naveed Younas, this auction represents a windfall from a beloved childhood memory, turning a dusty shelf item into a valuable asset for a new owner.
