Former PE Teacher Permanently Barred from Profession Over Offensive Social Media Posts

A former physical education teacher has been permanently banned from the teaching profession after a disciplinary panel reviewed a series of vile social media rants he posted targeting migrants and expressing extreme right-wing political views.

Social Media Comments Deemed to Bring Profession Into Disrepute

Sam Everett, 29, who taught PE at Haughton Academy in Darlington, County Durham, for two years beginning in September 2022, used his X (formerly Twitter) account to voice inflammatory opinions. His profile clearly identified him as a teacher at the school, and he failed to implement appropriate privacy controls, making his comments publicly visible and directly associating them with his professional role.

Between December 2023 and February 2024, Everett posted multiple remarks that were found to have "brought the profession into disrepute." The comments included claims that immigrants come to the United Kingdom from "intolerable and barbaric places" and suggestions that the British navy should be deployed against migrants.

Secretary of State Overrules Initial Panel Decision

Initially, a teaching regulatory panel had determined that Everett's comments were neither racist nor sexist, which could have allowed him to return to the classroom. However, the Secretary of State's decision-maker intervened to overrule this finding, imposing a permanent ban instead.

The decision-maker concluded that the panel's original finding alone would not "satisfy the public interest requirement concerning public confidence in the profession." The ban was implemented specifically to maintain public trust in teaching standards.

Specific Examples of Offensive Content

Everett's social media activity included numerous inflammatory statements:

  • In one post, he wrote: "There’s not an Islamist problem in our country according to some. How many times do we get called racists for being English? These people come from the most intolerable and barbaric places you can imagine and think they have more rights than us. Bore off."
  • He commented on a Britain First post suggesting naval deployment against migrants.
  • Another post stated: "Anyone who says comrade deserves to be shipped to Russia so they can live under Putin and have everything they say recorded for the state to monitor. No communist belongs here."
  • He asserted: "If you don’t respect our laws, culture and way of life you should leave, nobody is forcing you to stay. We don’t go to other peoples countries and tell them they’re wrong for how they go about things."
  • In another comment, he claimed: "The point being people coming into this country do not share British values and there are instances of these people talking them down. If they don’t like Britain why do they come here?"
  • He also posted: "So far removed from society you. Good honest brits have had enough of all the goings on around the country especially in the capital. Jews can’t walk freely without fear of being killed, they desecrate our monuments and buildings. They hate us. Fact."

Professional Consequences and Public Interest

The case highlights the significant professional consequences teachers face for inappropriate social media use, particularly when their online behavior is identifiable and conflicts with educational values of inclusion and respect. Everett's permanent ban serves as a stark reminder that maintaining public confidence in the teaching profession is paramount, and offensive public commentary can result in severe disciplinary action.

This incident underscores the ongoing challenges educational institutions face in monitoring staff conduct on social platforms and balancing freedom of expression with professional responsibilities.
