Sarah Michelle Gellar Stuns in London Amid Buffy Reboot Cancellation Drama
Sarah Michelle Gellar looked absolutely sensational while promoting her latest movie, Ready Or Not 2: Here I Come, in London on Friday. The actress, aged 47, appeared decades younger than her years, effortlessly slimmed into a thigh-skimming black mini dress as she headed to a radio appearance in the capital.
Chic Fashion and Co-Star Glamour
Gellar's chic ensemble featured dramatic draped sleeves and a high collar, with her frame accentuated by a pair of towering heels. She highlighted her features with subtle make-up and styled her long blonde tresses into loose, bouncy curls, exuding elegance and poise.
She was joined by her co-star, Kathryn Newton, 29, who radiated old Hollywood glamour in a white mini dress, complete with opera gloves and stylish shades. The duo turned heads with their sophisticated looks, drawing attention to their film promotion efforts.
Buffy Reboot Cancellation Revealed
This glamorous outing comes as Gellar expressed her deep sadness over Hulu's decision to cancel the highly anticipated reboot of Buffy The Vampire Slayer. According to reports from TMZ, both Gellar and the reboot's director, Chloe Zhao, felt blindsided by the sudden development and its timing.
Gellar, who famously portrayed Buffy Summers for seven seasons on the original show from 1997 to 2003, did not hold back in her criticism. She blamed an unnamed Disney executive for scrapping the reboot, alleging that he made constant reminders of his dislike for the original series.
Executive Decision Uncovered
Fans quickly speculated about the identity of this executive, with Craig Erwich, president of Disney Television Group, emerging as a prime suspect. Multiple sources have now confirmed to the Daily Mail that it was indeed Erwich who made the executive decision to axe the Buffy reboot.
An insider revealed, "It was him; the buck stopped with Craig. He just didn't like the project and he didn't think it was any good. He rolled his eyes whenever it came up, like he was beleaguered that he had to do it. He didn't like how it was shaping up so he axed it. Most people here think that was a colossal mistake, but it was his decision."
Reboot Production and Fallout
The cancellation has left the cast and crew devastated and in complete shock. In February 2025, Deadline reported that Gellar would reprise her role as Buffy Summers in a pilot ordered by Hulu, with Hamnet director Chloe Zhao, a self-professed lifelong Buffy fan, set to direct the pilot episode.
Actress Ryan Kiera Armstrong, 16, was tapped to lead the reboot as Sunnydale's newest vampire slayer, just three years younger than Gellar when she was originally cast. Sister screenwriting duo Nora and Lilla Zuckerman had written the pilot, with original executive producers Gail Berman and Fran and Kaz Kuzui also attached.
Throughout production, Gellar kept her five million Instagram followers updated with behind-the-scenes photos, including a table read from last July and a pose with Zhao holding wooden daggers. However, on Saturday, she posted a somber video announcing the reboot's cancellation, which she learned about on March 13 during her film premiere.
Future Hopes for Buffy
Despite this setback, there may still be hope for the Buffy reboot. A source hinted that Gellar is exploring options to take the show elsewhere, aiming to give fans the revival they have been eagerly awaiting for over two decades. This potential move could breathe new life into the beloved franchise, offering a glimmer of optimism amidst the disappointment.
