Spandau Ballet Singer Ross Davidson Accused of Rape, Court Hears Mannequin Fantasy
Ex-Spandau Ballet Singer On Trial For Rape, Court Hears

A former frontman for the iconic 80s band Spandau Ballet told an alleged victim he fantasised about sex with a person in a state like a mannequin, "still, lifeless and unresponsive", a court has been told.

Allegations of Attack in North London

Ross Davidson, 37, from Finchley, north London, has pleaded not guilty to raping a woman in March 2015. Wood Green Crown Court heard the alleged attack occurred while the woman was sleeping in his bed. The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, said she woke to find him raping her and felt "helpless".

She told jurors she went to the bathroom "just to get out of the situation", adding: "I just tried to compose myself and I was scared to react. I didn't know what would happen if I reacted." She said Davidson was "quite blase" and seemed happy for her to leave afterwards.

Disturbing Fantasy Revealed in Court

The court heard that prior to the alleged rape, Davidson had a conversation with the woman where he discussed his sexual interests. The alleged victim claimed he "mentioned he liked the idea of having sex with a mannequin, a person in a helpless state, someone not moving".

She said she initially thought he meant a fashion model, but the conversation deepened. "He said still, lifeless, unresponsive," she testified. She understood this to mean he was referring to intercourse with someone who was asleep.

Defence barrister Charlotte Newell KC suggested the conversation was about role-play and "pretending to be asleep" rather than actual sleep. The woman confirmed Davidson never asked her to engage in such activities.

Further Charges and Voyeurism Admission

Davidson, who performed under the stage name Ross Wild, also denies attempted rape and sexual assault against a second woman. These charges relate to an incident in Thailand in 2019, where he allegedly filmed himself groping her.

Jurors were told that in a separate matter, Davidson has pleaded guilty to a charge of voyeurism in December 2019 against the same woman from the Thailand case.

The court heard details of the pair's relationship, which began on a dating app. They met twice in person, years apart, and had consensual sex on both occasions, including in the days before the alleged 2015 rape. The woman said she found his demeanour "more assertive" on the second visit and had planned to leave early.

Davidson, an Aberdeen-born musical theatre actor who starred in the West End's We Will Rock You and fronted Spandau Ballet in 2018, denies all charges. The trial continues.
