Carl Froch Brands Tyson Fury's Boxing Comeback 'Pointless' at Age 37
Froch: Fury's Boxing Comeback at 37 is 'Pointless'

Former super-middleweight world champion Carl Froch has delivered a scathing assessment of Tyson Fury's planned return to professional boxing, bluntly labelling the heavyweight's comeback as "pointless". The criticism comes as Fury, who officially retired from the sport twelve months ago, recently announced his intention to fight again in pursuit of a historic third reign as world champion.

Fury's Return Timeline and Opponent Search

Tyson Fury is reportedly targeting a ring return within the coming months, with a potential warm-up bout scheduled for April. This fight is intended to prepare him for a subsequent world title challenge. His initial preference for a comeback opponent was fellow British heavyweight Anthony Joshua. However, those plans have been complicated by Joshua's ongoing recovery from injuries sustained in a serious car accident last month.

In the absence of a Joshua fight, speculation suggests Fury could instead face current champion Fabio Wardley. Wardley was elevated to full champion status in December after Oleksandr Usyk vacated the belt rather than face the Ipswich fighter. As Fury continues his training camp in Thailand, the boxing world is divided on the merits of his return.

Froch's Blunt Critique on Social Media

Carl Froch, never one to mince words, expressed his scepticism forcefully on his YouTube channel. "Coming back into boxing at 37 years old, when he has been out for over a year, is anybody bothered?" Froch questioned. "Does anybody care? I don't want to slander him because it's Tyson Fury and he is great; he has been a great servant to boxing."

Froch continued, acknowledging Fury's legacy while dismissing the current endeavour. "He is a brilliant character, and I don't want to give him any stick but I'm not bothered if he comes back to boxing or not. I don't care anymore. He has retired five times. When he retired last, I knew that he was going to come back out of retirement."

Questioning Fury's Recent Record and Logic

The former champion elaborated on his reasoning, pointing to Fury's recent performances. "I think that the only reason that he should be coming back and the only fight worth looking at would be the 'AJ' fight," Froch stated, referencing the long-anticipated bout with Anthony Joshua.

Froch then cast doubt on Fury's standing, suggesting he has effectively been beaten in his last three high-profile contests. "There is an argument that Fury lost to [Francis] Ngannou, there's one loss, but he got the decision, then he lost twice to Oleksandr Usyk. There are three fights there where he has been beat, really, and now he is coming back after over a year out, it doesn't make any sense, it's pointless."

Offering alternative advice, Froch suggested Fury should target rising contenders if he is serious about reclaiming top status. "If you're going to come back and fight and try to be a top boy, and you want to get back into the mix at world level, jump in there with someone like Moses Itauma or [Agit] Kabayel."

The stark comments from Froch add a significant layer of controversy to Fury's comeback narrative, framing it not as a heroic return but as a potentially misguided venture for an ageing fighter with a complicated recent history in the sport.
