Prominent US sports figures have condemned the killing of registered nurse Alex Pretti by federal agents in Minneapolis on Saturday. Pretti, 37, is the second person shot and killed by federal agents in the city in less than three weeks amid protests over Donald Trump's immigration crackdown.
Two-time NBA All-Star Tyrese Haliburton posted on social media: 'Alex Pretti was murdered.' WNBA stars Breanna Stewart and Angel Reese also spoke out. Stewart held a sign reading 'ABOLISH ICE' before her Unrivaled game, later saying: 'We're so fueled by hate right now instead of love.' She added that her wife, Marta Xargay, is applying for US citizenship, making the issue personal.
NFL figures reacted as well. Former Steelers safety Ryan Clark paid tribute on X: 'Rest Easy Alex Pretti. Bro was a hero.' Vikings cornerback Dwight McGlothern Jr wrote: 'It's not right what's happening in Minnesota.' Hall of Famer Alan Page clarified that images of him at protests were false, but he understood the frustration over 'gratuitous violence.'
Major Minnesota sports teams—the Vikings, Wild, Timberwolves, Lynx, and Minnesota United FC—joined businesses in calling for a peaceful resolution. An open letter urged de-escalation and collaboration among officials.
