Infant Dies After Ejection from Teen Mother's Car in Texas Crash

A devastating car accident in Fort Worth, Texas has claimed the life of a six-month-old infant who was ejected from the vehicle during the collision. The tragic incident occurred on March 7 when 17-year-old Karla Lopez ran a stop sign at the intersection of Rock Island Street and Azle Avenue, crashing into another car on the residential street.

Unrestrained Infant Suffered Catastrophic Injuries

According to police reports provided to the Daily Mail, Lopez's infant son Sebastian Reyes was not properly restrained in the vehicle at the time of the accident. Upon impact, the six-month-old baby was hurled from the car, sustaining life-threatening injuries that ultimately proved fatal.

Emergency responders rushed Sebastian to the nearby Cook Children's Medical Center where medical teams worked desperately to save his life. His grandmother Casandra Rios shared heartbreaking details on Facebook, revealing that the infant suffered severe brain injuries, significant swelling, and cerebral bleeding.

Tragic Outcome Despite Medical Efforts

Despite the best efforts of medical professionals, Sebastian Reyes succumbed to his injuries two days later on March 9. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed the infant died in the pediatric intensive care unit. An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the exact manner and cause of death.

Family member Maria Meza expressed the family's devastation on a GoFundMe page established to help cover funeral expenses, writing: "I hate that I have to make this for our sweet little boy Sebastian Reyes but unfortunately he passed away today around 6pm. Doctor try everything they could."

Teen Mother Faces Serious Criminal Charges

Karla Lopez, the infant's 17-year-old mother, was transported to hospital with non-critical injuries following the crash. After receiving medical treatment, she was arrested and charged with reckless injury to a child resulting in serious bodily injury.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported that Lopez has since been released on a $30,000 bond. If convicted of the current charges, she could face up to 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine. Prosecutors are considering upgrading the charges to manslaughter or criminally negligent homicide following Sebastian's death.

Community Support and Ongoing Investigation

The GoFundMe campaign established for the Reyes family had already raised more than $2,100 by Tuesday morning, with Meza expressing gratitude for the community's support. The family plans to share funeral arrangements once they have been finalized.

Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. It remains unclear whether anyone in the other vehicle involved in the collision sustained injuries. The accident serves as a tragic reminder of the critical importance of proper child restraint systems in vehicles.
